Scarbolo | Lauzacco, Friuli

Scarbolo today is defined by momentum. While the estate was founded by Valter Scarbolo, it is now firmly shaped by the next generation, Mattia Scarbolo and Lara Scarbolo, who are carving out a new, confident identity for the winery. Their vision is clear: respect Friuli’s traditions, but sharpen them through precision, restraint, and a more international lens. Mattia leads the work in the cellar with a Burgundian sense of detail and proportion, while Lara drives the estate’s direction and clarity of purpose. Together, they’ve shifted Scarbolo from a respected local name into one of the most exciting modern estates in Friuli - not by reinventing the region, but by refining it. The focus is on texture, balance, and wines that carry both authority and energy.

That philosophy is most clearly expressed in Areore, the estate’s richest white. A blend of Chardonnay and Tocai Friulano, it captures the natural breadth of Chardonnay alongside Friulano’s saline edge and mineral freshness. Fermented and aged on lees, the wine gains depth and structure without losing tension. Oak is present, but never declarative - absorbed into the fabric of the wine rather than sitting on top of it. In the glass, Areore delivers ripe orchard fruit, subtle citrus, and fine spice, carried by a stony, savoury line that keeps the wine focused and alive. The texture recalls a fine Côte de Beaune, layered and composed, yet the expression remains unmistakably Friulian: bright, saline, and precise.

Across the range, Scarbolo’s wines show the same discipline. This is international polish applied with regional intelligence, guided by a new generation unafraid to make quiet, confident decisions. Mattia and Lara are not chasing trends; they’re building a future-facing identity for Friuli, one carefully judged wine at a time.
