Giuseppe Bordone | Roero, Piedmont
Azienda Agricola Giuseppe Bordone is a small, family-run estate tucked into the rolling hills of Roero, a corner of Piedmont long overshadowed by its Langhe neighbours yet capable of extraordinary finesse. Roero’s defining sandy soils and elevated slopes produce wines of natural perfume, clarity, and mineral drive - qualities Bordone has quietly refined rather than reinvented.
The estate is led by Giuseppe Bordone alongside his daughter Alice, with a focus on old-vine Arneis grown on steep, south-facing sites. These vineyards deliver concentration without heaviness, preserving Roero’s hallmark tension and saline edge. Farming is attentive and traditional, with yields kept deliberately low to allow the vines to express both site and season with precision.
Their Roero Arneis Riserva stands apart not just within the appellation, but within Italy as a whole. Fermented and aged in new French oak, it challenges preconceptions of the variety. Where Arneis is often treated as a simple, early-drinking white, Bordone treats it with the seriousness usually reserved for grander grapes. The oak is not decorative or dominant; it acts as a structural frame, adding breadth and composure rather than flavour.
In the glass, the wine shows ripe pear, stone fruit, and almond, layered with subtle spice and a distinctly saline undertow. Texture is where it truly distinguishes itself - broad and quietly powerful, yet pulled taut by acidity and minerality. The finish is long, savoury, and controlled, evolving with air and rewarding time in bottle. This is Arneis with ageing potential and intellectual weight.
What makes Giuseppe Bordone compelling is restraint. Nothing here feels forced or inflated. The ambition is clear, but it’s channelled through discipline rather than volume. This is a wine that reveals itself gradually, gaining complexity rather than losing freshness as it opens.
For us, Bordone represents one of Piedmont’s most under appreciated expressions. It’s a reminder that true distinction often sits just outside the spotlight - expressive, confident, and quietly luxurious. This is Arneis at its highest level, and a producer we’re proud to stand behind.
